Greensboro, NC -- The outpouring of community support continues for Carl Wheeler, a good samaritan from Burlington who was struck and nearly killed by a drunk driver.

On Saturday, April 14, students from NC A&T Speech Fundamentals class held a "Car Hopping for Cash" event to help raise funds. In the end students raised $500 dollars selling Sonic discount cards.

Part of the money came from people who simply donated money. Sonic donated 10% from the discount cards sold.

The group will use the money to buy a Walmart gift card.

Carl Wheeler was hit while helping strangers push their van off the Interstate last July in Alamance County.

He didn't have any insurance and his compensation was only about $1,400.00.

Seventeen year-old Darren Jones was killed by the driver who Troopers said was driving while intoxicated when he plowed into Jones and Wheeler.

In February that driver, Curtis Lutterloh pled guilty to Felony Death by Vehicle and Felony Injury.

But the fight to live and survive hasn't ended for Carl Wheeler and his family.

Esther Wheeler, Carl's mother, quit her job as a school bus driver to care full-time for him. In the meantime, the bills continue to add up.

Since WFMY News 2 brought this story to the public's attention, the generosity has come from a 10 year-old, churches, numerous anonymous strangers and now college students.

WFMY News 2 will continue to bring you stories of hope, survival and community outreach. If you have a story to share please email us at: news@wfmy.com.
