ASHEVILLE - A former Owen Middle School teacher pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to producing child pornography by recording videos of students' genitals.
Kevin Mark Calloway faces up to 70 years in prison and $750,000 in fines when he is sentenced, Magistrate Judge Dennis Howell said.
Calloway declined to address the court but replied, "Yes, your honor," when asked if he understood the terms of a plea agreement worked out with the U.S. Attorney's Office. The document remains sealed by the court.
The former sixth-grade math and science teacher pleaded guilty at the hearing to two counts of production of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.
Howell ordered Calloway to remain in custody until he is sentenced. A date for a sentencing hearing hasn't been set. A pre-sentence report must first be prepared.
The judge also approved an order sought by prosecutors as part of the plea agreement seeking forfeiture of Calloway's interest in his home in Swannanoa.
Calloway, 41, was charged in a criminal complaint filed by federal authorities Feb. 29. According to court documents, he admitted to using his cellphone to record videos of students' genitals as they urinated in the boys' bathroom at Owen Middle.
Detective Kevin Briggs of the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office testified at a detention hearing last month that Calloway also told investigators that for years he exchanged sexually explicit texts and videos with students and former students. Briggs said Calloway had as many as 11 victims.
Calloway asked a sixth-grade boy in the school locker room if he could take a picture of his genitals, to which the boy agreed, Briggs said.
The same student later touched Calloway's genitals, the officer said.
The detective said a ninth-grade girl agreed to text Calloway a nude photograph of herself, and officers seized videos from his home showing a 10-year-old girl showering and a teenage boy urinating in the bathroom at the suspect's home.
Calloway admitted he would search the Internet for explicit images depicting teenage boys, according to the complaint.
The federal charges followed Calloway's arrest by Buncombe County sheriff's deputies in February on charges of taking indecent liberties with a student, secret peeping and first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.
According to the federal complaint, Owen Middle administrators received reports from four sixth-grade boys in December that Calloway was using his cellphone to take pictures of the "private parts" of boys as they urinated in a school bathroom.
The federal complaint states that Owen Middle administrators conducted an internal investigation of allegations made by the four students but concluded they were unfounded.
But on Feb. 1, detectives learned about the incident and opened an investigation.
