Alamance County, NC -- This months "2 Those Who Care" recipient went above and beyond to help a family in need. When WFMY first reported the story of a man permanently injured by a drunk driver you responded.
You opened your hearts and wallets and gave generously to the family of Carl Wheeler one of two victims of the driver who has been convicted of injuring Carl and killing 17 year-old Darren Jones last summer. .
How you responded: a bought and paid for van, that Esther Wheeler can use to get Carl to his appointments. An electric wheelchair, adult diapers, and an electric bed. Your generosity didn't stop there, you gave financial support and your money has helped the family pay their huge debts, including rent.
Carl was injured when he stopped to help strangers on the side of the road. Troopers said that's when a drunk driver slammed into him leaving him permanently disabled and killed a teenager. Carl has not been able to speak or walk since the accident which happened in July 2011.
The driver, Curtis Lutterloh, pleaded in February and is now serving some prison time. Lutteroh never apologized the family of Darren Jones or Carl Wheeler.
After we aired their story, You have stepped up and are continuing to help the Wheeler family by donating money to a special bank account your generosity is changing lives and Esther makes sure her son knows, "I told you God is going to send us some Angels to help us and that is what he did. God sent us some Angels."
