Winston-Salem, NC -- Doctors said State Representative Larry Womble is improving as he recovers from a weekend car crash.

During a news conference Monday afternoon at Baptist Hospital, Doctor Russell Howerton said that Womble is alert and responding to stimuli.  He said that Womble is also responding to family members voices.

Womble was critically injured late Friday night in a head-on crash in the 2600 block of Reynolds Park Road.  The other driver, 54-year-old David Carmichael, died in the wreck.  Both Womble and Carmichael lived near the crash scene.

Monday, Police said their investigation and a witness' statment, reveals that Womble crossed the center and hit Carmichael's car head on. Police also said that Womble was not wearing his seatbelt when the crash happened. They are still trying to figure out if Carmichael was wearing his seatbelt.

Investigators said they don't believe excessive speed or impairing substances played a part in the wreck. However, they took blood samples from both men to be tested for any impairing substances.

Officers estimate Womble's speed at 50 mph and Carmichael's at 45 mph at the time of the crash. The speed limit on Reynolds Park Road, where the crash happened, is 45 mph.

Rep. Larry Womble and David Carmichael are not strangers to each other. They are neighbors, but also David Carmichael's father Hoagy has known Womble for years.  Hoagy ran against Larry Womble in 1990 for Southeast Ward seat on Winston-Salem city council.

Hoagy Carmichael told WFMY News 2's Mac Ingraham that he is hoping for a speedy recovery so he and Larry can continue their friendship.  He also described his son David as fun loving and caring man.

Womble, 70, is a Democrat serving his ninth term representing Forsyth County in the state house.

Rep. Earline Parmon, who also serves Forsyth County said of her colleague "he continues to show the same strength that he has shown when fighting for issues that matter to his community."
