North Carolina -- The North Carolina Utilities Commission could decide in January what rate increase, if any, Duke Energy will get.

Utilities Commission hearings over the rate increase proposal wrapped up mid-day Thursday.

Duke Energy wants to raise your rates by 7.2%, or about $7 a month. That's down from their original request of 15.2%.

Duke Energy says it needs a rate increase to pay for upgrades it already made and employee benefits. State Attorney General Roy Cooper says the company shouldn't get anything.

Now, it's up to the North Carolina Utilities Commission to decide how much of an increase, if any, Duke Energy should get.

Duke Energy wants the rate increase to take effect February 1, 2012. If the Utilities Commission hasn't made a decision by then, Duke can still raise your rates. They would have to refund you if the Utilities Commission agrees to a smaller increase or no increase.
