NC Redistricting Map 2011 - 2nd Draft
Raleigh, NC -- Opponents of Republican-drawn maps for district boundaries for the North Carolina Legislature and the state's congressional delegation are getting a quick start on litigation.
About 40 people sued in Wake County court Thursday, seeking to block the maps approved by the General Assembly in July for use starting next year. The lawsuit was filed two days after federal attorneys in Washington said they wouldn't challenge the maps based on a portion of the Voting Rights Act.
The plaintiffs, who include current and former state lawmakers, argue the plans violate the state and federal constitutions through illegally packing black voters in certain districts, splitting hundreds of voting precincts and crossing too many county lines. Republicans say the maps are lawful.
Several groups also plan to file another redistricting lawsuit Friday.
