Greensboro, NC -- This is a story every person should read and watch the video attached.
Both women and men can get breast cancer. And your first line of defense is you.
Tami Knutson from Cone Health Regional Cancer Center went step by step on how to do your own self breast exam.
First, stand in front of the mirror and look for any dimpling or changes in texture, or changes in color or texture.
Second, bend forward and look at your breasts in a mirror for any changes in shape, color or texture.
Next, lie down for the self exam, and use these steps:
Use the finger pads because they are more sensitive than finger tips.
Inspect from the mid sternum to armpit and the collar bone to under the breast.
Use light, medium and deep pressure.
Choose a pattern similar to mowing a lawn or circular starting around the nipple.
You should do a self exam every month. Knutson suggests women who are menstruating do it right after their cycle so breast tenderness doesn't play a part.
Everyone else should do it the same day every month. Her idea was, make it the day your rent is due or your electric bill.
If you do notice something irregular, contact your doctor.
