Raleigh, NC -- A coalition of groups has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block a new North Carolina law mandating ultrasounds and other requirements before a woman can have an abortion.

The state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, along with two branches of Planned Parenthood and other groups, filed the complaint Thursday.

They're challenging a law passed this year that requires health care providers to give out specific information at least 24 hours before the procedure. The required information includes details about the likely stage of development of the fetus and the availability of abortion alternatives.

It also requires doctors to perform an ultrasound examination of the fetus.

The lawsuit says the new regulations are an unconstitutional violation of the rights of health care providers and patients.

Rep. Ruth Samuelson, a Mecklenburg County Republican who sponsored the bill, says she expects the law to survive a challenge in court. She says the law will make abortions safer.
