Durham, NC -- The lawyer for a former Duke lacrosse player falsely accused of rape nearly five years ago says a $6.5 million federal lien against his client is an outrageous mistake.
The IRS filed the lien against Reade Seligmann earlier this month for taxes the agency says he owed in 2007, the same year he reached an undisclosed settlement with Duke University and charges against him and the other players were dropped.
Seligmann's lawyer Richard Emery says his client paid his taxes that year and it wasn't anywhere near $6.5 million.
Emery refused to disclose how much the settlement was worth or how much Seligmann paid in taxes for 2007.
The IRS says it doesn't discuss individual tax cases for privacy reasons.
