Kernersville, NC -- They're heroes on a daily basis, but this holiday season, some Kernersville Police Officers are Ted E. Bear heroes to local kids in need.

Officers handed out stuffed animals to students at La Petite Academy as part of the annual program. Students get a gift for the holidays, and Police Chief Ken Gamble said officers get to make lasting impressions. "We can directly interact with kids and the police department, one of the things we want to do when kids are very young, is develop that relationship where they see officers as a friend, and somebody they can go to when they're in trouble, as opposed to somebody to be being afraid of."

Kernersville police also keep stuffed animals in their cars at all times, to give to children involved in traumatic experiences if they come upon them when responding to a call.
