High Point, NC -- Investigators said members of one Triad community who voiced their concerns about activity at a neighborhood grocery store helped in an investigation that ended with the arrests of 16 people.

A joint effort between the Division of Alcohol Law Enforcement and the High Point Police Department focused on the Daniel Brook Grocery Store on Henley Street in High Point, which is near two daycare centers.

ALE Special Agent in Charge Rodney Beckom said people who live nearby were vocal to police.

"Some people even commented that they were afraid for their kids to play in the front yard," said Beckom.

Beckom said undercover agents purchased drugs, mostly marijuana, in the parking lot and inside the store.

"We could purchase from outside, just as simple as driving up, asking for the drugs, just a few seconds, get the drugs, pay the money and leave, also we had gone into the store and did transactions," said Beckom.

He said employees weren't selling the drugs, but didn't do anything to stop the activity that was going on. He also said employees sold drug paraphernalia in the store that they admitted to knowing was for controlled substances.

The operation was part of the High Point Police Department's Crime Reduction Initiative and ALE's Community Betterment Initiative.

"It's all about the community and the citizens voicing these problems and letting the police department know, 'hey this is an issue, we need your help,'" said Beckom.
