-- The coveted front-row seat in the White House briefing room that was formerly occupied by reporter Helen Thomas now has a new owner. On Tuesday an Associated Press reporter took her seat for the first time in the much-sought after seat.

Thomas, a long time White House reporter, abruptly resigned in June after creating a firestorm of controversy in response to remarks she made calling on Israelis to get "out of Palestine."

Her seat has sat empty while the White House Correspondents Association decided who should get the coveted seat.

In the end it was decided that the AP gets Thomas's seat and Fox News Channel's White House correspondent Major Garrett takes AP former front-row seat next to CBS News' Chip Reid.

The 89-year old Thomas had been a columnist for Hearst Corporation.
