Winston-Salem, NC -- It will now cost more for the City of Winston-Salem will now charge internet sweepstakes businesses to set up shop.
The City Council voted unanimously Monday night to make the businesses pay $2,500 to open a business where internet sweepstakes will be offered. The city will also charge $500 for each electronic sweeptakes machine.
The city says the fees could bring more than $345,000 in revenue. The ordinance takes effect July 1.
In November a 2 Wants To Know investigation revealed that internet sweepstakes businesses are legal under North Carolina law. They allow you to win cash on the spot.
