Greensboro, NC -- If you need to clear driveways and sidewalks of ice, you have options when store shelves run bare.

Employees at Lowe's Home Improvement on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro say when they run out of ice melt, many customers stock up on water softener salt pellets. It's typically used for hard water, but it can also help melt snow and ice.

Employees say it's better to use ice melt instead of the salt pellets because it's safer. But, if supplies are low, it's the next best thing.

Lowe's stores in Greensboro got more shipments of ice melt Tuesday, and they expect them to go fast.
