Winston-Salem, NC -- A woman was found stabbed to death Friday morning behind a home on Ardmore Village Lane. Her estranged husband, a suspect in the murder, was found hanging from a tree less than two hours later in Davidson County.
Capt. David Clayton says officers were called to the scene around 5:30am after someone called 911 reporting a woman screaming for help. The victim, Allison Holt Gaither, was found in the backyard of a home on the street,
Around 7am, authorities in Davidson County were called after a report of a man hanging from a tree off Friendship Church Road.
Davidson County Sheriff David Grice says the deaths are connected. Grice says the man has been identified as 32-year-old Cory Gaither.
Gaither is the husband of the Winston-Salem murder victim. Grice says Allison Gaither had taken out a restraining order against her husband.
"The development of the 50-B Law is to protect people against domestic violence, and regardless of the effectiveness of the 50-B, it still happens sometimes." Grice explained.
Investigators believe Cory Gaither chased his wife before stabbing her to death in a neighbor's yard. They say Gaither then drove 11 miles into Davidson County and killed himself.
