Elon University Statement:

Eight Elon University students were arrested Feb. 26, 2009, as part of a joint investigation by local law enforcement agencies. Common to all students were charges for varying degrees of drug related charges. Some students were also charged with possession of stolen property. The University Police were not involved in the investigation as the alleged crimes are reported to have occurred off campus. Staff members in the Elon University Office of Judicial Affairs are now contacting the students and their parents about the processes that take place following such allegations.

As the university learns more about the alleged offenses, a decision will be made regarding each student's access to campus: whether to allow them on campus only to attend classes, or give them greater access. Any decision must weigh the rights of the accused with the need to prevent disruptions in the orderly functioning of the educational process for other students and to ensure the safety of the student body. The university will follow its normal judicial process to ensure fairness for all involved.

No criminal incident of this scope has involved Elon students in several years and is considered quite unusual. Elon does not tolerate felony criminal behavior, and if the individual students involved in this incident are found guilty of the allegations against them, consequences could include sanctions up to and including suspension or expulsion from the university.

Because campus police were not a part of the investigation, Elon University is directing all questions about the defendants and their charges to the Town of Elon Police Department.
