GOLDSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- Funeral arrangements have been announced for Wayne County Sheriff Carey A. Winders.
A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon and evening at Faith Free Will Baptist Church in Goldsboro.
Funeral services are planned for Wednesday afternoon in the Kornegay Arena at the University of Mount Olive.
Winders was taken to the hospital on Friday after suffering a heart attack at his home. He could not be revived.
When Winders was elected sheriff in 1994, he was the first Republican to hold the post in Wayne County. The 57-year-old sheriff was last elected in 2010, and the office was to be on this year's ballot.
Winders started his law enforcement career as a patrol officer with Goldsboro Police in 1984.
