GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. --  The wave of the future is here and it's arrived right in our backyard in Guilford County!

Colonel Randy Powers showed WFMY News 2 the new equipment Thursday that will allow a crime scene to be captured in 3D.

The equipment is part of the 3D Crime Scene Capture System that the Guilford County Sheriff's Office purchased from 3rd Tech, a company based in Durham.

Sheriff Barnes says the system uses the Focus 3D Laser Scanner and SceneVision-3D software to measure and photograph crime scenes quickly and accurately. This results in a 3D computer graphics model of a crime scene.

Using this model, Barnes says investigators can look at a crime scene from any view point and can measure virtually all objects at the scene. The virtual crime scene can also be shown in court to bring the jury to the crime scene.
