GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. - The Guilford County Department of Transportation team came in to work at the usual time Tuesday, around 7:00 a.m. But they're not going home until the storm is over and the roads are safe.

There's a lot of work to do to get ready for a winter weather event. There are thousands of pounds of salt piled up, ready to coat more than 500 miles of roads on the east side of Guilford County.

"I love it. I don't mind the snow," Transportation Worker Donald Austin said. "We can't stop it. If it comes, it comes."

But, before the salt hits the road, a team of maintenance workers make sure all twenty-seven trucks are good to go. Attaching the plows takes at least three people. Getting everything to line up just right requires a lot of coordination.

Planning for the weather event is complicated as well. But, managers like Antoine White say, "The number one goal is just to make sure that everybody goes home to their loved ones."

Driving around one of these huge trucks can be challenging on a sunny day. When there's snow and ice on the road, Austin said, "It's pretty scary sometimes. I can't stop on a dime."

Workers say everyone would be a lot safer if drivers gave the salt and plow drivers a little more space on the roads.

Crews are not brining the roads this time because it's supposed to rain first. The brine would just wash away.
