GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Volunteer Center of Greensboro said it is hoping at least 2,000 people in the Triad community will come to the Four Seasons Town Centre to participate in service projects, enjoy live music and spend family time together during the nationwide Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

The Volunteer Center is one of six service organizations in the country to have been selected as a grant recipient from the Points of Life Foundation and the Corporation for National and Community Service. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Volunteer Center will have hands-on service projects stations throughout the mall. At those stations, volunteers will be crafting snack packs for children assisted by the Out of the Garden Project and putting together trail mix packages that will be distributed to the homeless population during the Partners Ending Homelessness Point in Time count.

Additional activities during the event include those for children, who can enjoy story time with "Martin's Big Words" or participate in a scavenger hunt. All mall guests can enjoy live musical performances from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and visit the non-profit fair from noon to 2 p.m. Also, Greensboro Urban Ministry will be collecting food donations at bins throughout the mall.

Volunteer Center executive director Carley Swaim said she hopes people use this holiday as an opportunity to give back to their community. "Dare to Dream" is the theme of the Volunteer Center's day of service, and Swaim said, "We just want people to dare to dream about a community coming together to serve through the spirit of altruism."

People who pre-registered or wish to register on site can visit one of two sign-in tables, which are located at the main mall entrance between J.C. Penney and Dillard's and at the main mall entrance near Belk. Swaim also encourages people to consider, while they are at the day of service, volunteering throughout the remainder of this month, which is Martin Luther King, Jr. Month of Service.
