Retailers Change Return Policies For Holiday Season

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Stores in the Triad were busy the day after Christmas with shoppers making returns or exchanges.

"Just the PJs with the tags still on them. Hopefully they'll accept them," said one shopper exchanging a gift. 

Another shopper explained, "I didn't have my receipt so I just gave them the card that I paid for it with and they just scanned my card and that was it."

The National Retail Federation says 28-percent of stores surveyed change their return policies for the holiday season.

Target is one of those.

They extend their refund-window for items purchased between November first and Christmas. For purchases made in that period, 30-day refund period began December 26.

Toys-R-Us, Walmart, Amazon.com and Best Buy also change their policies at Christmas.

But before you head to the store - make sure to read the fine print.

Wal-mart's return policy varies by department and item. For example - if you buy a computer - you only have 15 days to return the item. If you by a TV - you have 90 days.

At Macy's, you will be charged a 15-percent restocking fee if you return a mattress or furniture.

Amazon.com officers free return shipping but only for certain items like shoes, clothing and accessories.

Some websites have interesting exchange policies.

You can not return TVs larger than 37 inches to Overstock.com and online purchases made at Sports Authority can not be returned to stores.

Retailers change their policies to avoid return fraud. The National Retail Federation estimates retailers to lose $3.4 billion because of holiday return fraud.
