ASHEBORO, N.C.-- The North Carolina Zoo has lost another animal.

Zoo officials announced Monday that a female sea lion died over the weekend. According to a news release, the cause of death has not been determined. The 17 month old mammal was named "Storm", was found dead in the zoo's Seal/Sea Lion holding facilities around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, by zoo keepers.

The death was extremely surprising, according to keepers, who reported that the mammal was behaving normally and showed no signs of illness less than an hour earlier. A necropsy performed late Saturday provided no answers, zoo Chief Veterinarian Dr. Mike Loomis reported. Blood and tissue samples have been sent to outside laboratories for further testing in an effort to help determine the cause of death.

Storm was one of two sea lions that arrived in Asheboro in early November after being rescued by Sea World of San Diego in June 2012.

The remaining three animals appear healthy and remain on exhibit, according to keepers. "We were aware that any animals rescued from the wild may have underlying health issues that contributed to their original need for rescue," said zoo General Curator Ken Reininger.
