FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Cumberland County authorities accuse a St. Pauls woman of trying to fill her dead patient's prescription for a painkiller.

A statement from the sheriff's office on Thursday says 34-year old Maria Dawn Locklear is charged with attempting to obtain a controlled substance by fraud/forgery/subterfuge and attempting to traffic opium by possession. Officials said she was employed as a hospice registered nursing assistant in Pembroke.

Locklear is free from the county detention center on a $5,000 bond. She was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

The sheriff's office said Locklear's patient died of colon cancer.  Four days later, she tried to fill the woman's prescription for sixty Oxycontin tablets at a local pharmacy. Last Sunday, Locklear returned to the pharmacy to pick up the prescription, and she was arrested shortly afterward.
