GREENSBORO, N.C. -- If you're receiving calls from a person claiming to be a computer technician, the Guilford County Sheriff's Office has a warning for you: they could be trying to take your money or harm your computer!
On Tuesday, Sheriff BJ Barnes said his office has received complaints about phone calls from people posing as computer technicians.
According to the sheriff's office, the suspects are calling from other countries and are asking people for $200. In return for a credit card number, they'll remotely remove a potential virus off of their computer.
Barnes says the caller(s) may ask you to download software that will remove any viruses, but the software is actually malware.
Typically, software companies will not call and ask for money over the phone to remove viruses. Be careful what you download.
