ASHEVILLE, NC -- Officials at the Western North Carolina Nature Center are investigating what they say is the suspicious death of a deer.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports Nature Center director Chris Gentile said park officials are on high alert following the discovery of Baby, a 13-year-old female deer, who was found dead Friday morning in her exhibit with suspicious injuries.
Gentile said the deer appeared to have broken her neck running into a fence and had a suspicious puncture wound on her hind quarters.
Officials initially thought the deer might have been shot, but an initial analysis indicates there was no bullet involved. It's the third animal to be lost at the center in six months.
Two rabbits were stolen from the Nature Center in June and they were never recovered.
