STONEVILLE, N.C. -- Rockingham County Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating after a homeowner shot at a suspect during a home invasion early Saturday morning.
Rita and Christopher Shelton told deputies they awoke after they heard their dog barking at their home on Anglin Mill Road. Christopher grabbed his shotgun and confronted an intruder in the den area of the home.
Christopher told deputies he fired a shot at the intruder who was armed with a hammer. He said the intruder fled the home and yelled to another subject outside to get in the car.
Deputies said the male suspects fled the area in a dark colored, possibly blue or black passenger car towards Martinsville, Virginia.
It is unknown at this time if Shelton hit the intruder when he fired his shot gun, but investigators believe he may have.
Sheriff Sam Page told WMFY News 2 that the outcome could've been much worse. "I'm glad it worked out where no one was seriously injured in the home and I was glad that they were able to defend themselves and protect themselves and they immediately notified law enforcement so we could get out there and try to help them."
Rockingham County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating this incident and anyone with information is asked to call them at 336-634-3232 or Crimestoppers at 336-349-9683.
