ASHEBORO, N.C.  -- The elephants at the North Carolina Zoo had some "tricks" up their trunks Thursday at the zoo's annual "Pachyderm Pumpkin Pounding."

Elephants and lions both got a chance to do their trick or treating early by pounding and partaking in pumpkins in their exhibits.

According to the keepers, the pumpkins provide both mental and physical stimulation for the animals, allowing them to manipulate the pumpkins and experience their taste and smell.
