GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro Police say an 8-year-old girl was pinned underneath her family's vehicle Tuesday morning.

The incident happened around 7:45 a.m. on Belmont Street, at Abernathy Park Apartments.*

Police say the child started the vehicle. Somehow, the vehicle shifted into neutral and began to roll backwards. The girl got out of the car and tried to stop it from rolling out of the parking space. However, the car rolled over the child's leg and pinned her underneath.

First responders freed the girl and took her to the hospital to treat her non-life threatening injuries. Police said the child was conscious and talking when they arrived.

Greensboro Fire Department Captain Tim Scarbrough said, "Any time you hear about a child, our hearts get ramped up. Our adrenaline flows a little bit harder...We don't tell children not to cry. Crying is the best thing for them because then we know they're breathing. They're awake."

Greensboro's Fire Department has an entire team dedicated to responding to these kinds of incidents. The Urban Search and Rescue Team trains to respond to incidents ranging from collapsed buildings to natural disasters.

"After the terror attacks in '01, that's when things really started to ramp up. We had a lot of funding come in. North Carolina took a leading role in getting the larger municipalities involved with it," Greensboro Fire Department Captain Lynn Coley said.

Greensboro Police told WFMY News 2 they are still investigating the incident and have not yet determined if the child's parents will face any charges.
