GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) -- A group is complaining to the Gaston County Commission about the euthanasia of 144 geese. The Charlotte Observer reported that animal rights advocates plan to present the commission with a petition with more than 5,000 signatures complaining about the deaths in June.
Gaston Parks Director Cathy Hart says the geese were euthanized after non-lethal efforts to remove them from a park failed. The petition being presented Tuesday calls for Hart's removal. Hart would not talk about the situation, saying she briefed the commission earlier. She said the geese were removed from Dallas Park because they were a public nuisance.
The citizens group asked the Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina to investigative what they say was deception by Hart and the parks advisory board about the geese.
