NEW RIVER AIR STATION, N.C. (AP) - Marine Corps Air Station New River is honoring more than 240 Americans killed 30 years ago when terrorist attacked the military barracks in Beirut that was home to a U.S. peacekeeping force. The event will be held Friday at the air station theater.

The military says it will give Marines a chance to learn more about the attack, which happened Oct. 23, 1983. Speakers include teacher and historian Ron Bower and Lt. Cmdr. Bryan Crittenden, a Marine chaplain who was a CH-46 pilot in 1983.

Also speaking are two retired sergeants who were nearby when the barracks was attacked. Many of the 241 killed were from Jacksonville because Camp Lejeune's 24th Marine Amphibious Unit was stationed in Beirut at the time.
