RALEIGH, N.C. -- Athletic officials across the country have banded together to stop underhanded tactics some sports agents use to illegally contact college athletes.

They have been joined by five agents certified by the NFL Players Association.

The group is pushing to strengthen laws barring sports agents or their representatives from providing benefits to athletes and regulating how they can contact athletes.

The proposals are outlined in a nine-page memo sent Thursday to the committee that will meet this month to consider updates to the Uniform Athlete Agents Act. The names of officials at 65 schools in 32 states appear in support of the proposals.

The changes would include broadening state laws to cover agents, runners, financial advisers, marketers or others who try to sign athletes or provide gifts that jeopardize their eligibility.
