MOCKSVILLE, N.C. -- A couple from Davie County was on the church bus that crashed in Tennessee.

The bus was on I-40 Wednesday afternoon carrying a group of seniors from Front Street Baptist Church in Statesville.

The left front tire on that bus blew out sending the bus crashing into a semi and an SUV.

73-year-old John Wright was killed.  He's from Davie county. His wife, 62-year-old Beverly Wright, was one of 14 people who got hurt.

Randall Ward is their neighbor in Mocksville. He and his wife last spoke to the Wrights on Saturday when the couple left for this trip.

"We solved a lot of problems sitting on those lawnmowers right there."

Somewhere between the Ward and the Wright homes, sometime in the decade they knew each other, Randall Ward and John Wright  became more than neighbors.

"He's the type person, the more you knew about him, the better you liked him," explained Randall.

Randall says John was a family man who put his wife and children first. He was dedicated to them, his church, and enjoying life.

"The best way to put it was that he was just as good a man that I ever met," said Ward.

John and his wife Beverly were retired and always on the go. Whether they were traveling, or spending time at the Davie County Senior Center, the Wrights were full of life.

Randall says John was a great athlete who participated in the Senior Games and organized an annual golf tournament for about 50 guys, including Randall.

"It was just a great; we used to have a lot of fun doing that."

The men swapped stories and shared memories -- as neighbors and friends.

"You're expecting them to come home anytime soon and they're not. Right now it's kind of tough, you know, the realization of them not being here," said Ward.

Randall and his wife have lived next-door to the Wrights for more than a decade.
