Help is Available: How to Navigate the Insurance Exchange

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The day has come. 

Depending on how you look at it, one of the most controversial - or awaited portions of the Affordable Care Act has launched. 

The insurance exchange opens October first. There will be several options, explanations and policies for insurance shoppers. It might be a confusing place to navigate but there are several resources available that can help.

"Our team has been very focused on training and getting certified as navigators so that we can go through the options with individuals. But once they complete training we will be able to assist training one on one, have the events on that calendar so people know where the navigators will be in the communities near them," explained Devin Griffith, Vice President, Care Continuum and Support Services, Randolph Hospital.

Randolph Hospital received a $352,320 federal grant to help educate people in Randolph, Moore and Montgomery counties about the Affordable Care Act. With that money, they have hired and trained four Navigators that will help educate and enroll uninsured people in those areas.

"This is going to take a lot of time - meeting with individuals one-on-one to help explain their options. Talking about insurance, helping them make informed decisions. There are a lot of questions out there and it's not going to be a 10 minutes conversation," explained Griffith.

Statewide, there will be nearly 200 navigators helping direct people around the insurance exchange. Legal Aid of North Carolina will be manning the statewide call center that will field navigators. That service launches full-time October 14th.

There will also be Certified Application Counselors around the state that will help people with enrollment. To get in touch with a counselor or navigator and schedule an appointment, you need to call 855-733-3711.

Another resource is the federal website There, people will find different coverage plans to meet their needs. People can also chat online or call the toll-free number 1-800-318-2496 for more assistance.

Help is also available through your local DSS offices and The United Way of Greater Greensboro. They will have full-time navigator beginning October 15 to assist people in the community.
