COLFAX, N.C. -- A bicyclist was killed after colliding with a tractor-trailer in Colfax early Tuesday morning.
Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol say a 20-year-old riding a bike veered in front of the gas truck on Highway 68 near Leabourne Road around 4:16 a.m.
The bicyclist died at the location of the accident. State trooper C.D. Knox said the bicyclist was traveling southbound in the northbound lane of Highway 68.
Knox said the biker was not wearing a helmet or reflective vest.
Speed and alcohol were not factors in the accident, according to Highway Patrol.
No charges have been filed against the 62-year-old driver of the tractor-trailer. A truck driver's supervisor with R.O. Harrell, Inc. told WFMY News 2, "Our hearts go out to this family." The driver is from Scottsburg, VA.
Traffic backed up on Highway 86 southbound for approximately two hours Tuesday morning. The truck had been pulled over onto Leabourne Road, where troopers were continuing their investigation and checking the truck as a procedural measure.
