GREENSBORO, NC-- Thursday night, Guilford County Schools (GCS) announced its teacher and Principal of the year at their Celebration of Excellence.

And the winners are...

Eugene Grant, Math Teacher at Southeast High School, for Teacher of the Year. According to a release from GCS, Grant has a heart for changing lives. He takes the reins from Karyn Dickerson, a Grimsley High English teacher and current North Carolina Teacher of the Year.

From GCS News Release:

Grant wrote that his desire to influence the next generation of leaders inspired him to become a teacher. In his classroom, he makes a point to reach students who may have had negative school experiences. His goal is to replace these negative experiences with positive memories of learning.

He wrote of a student named Isaiah, a once-failing student with a history of behavioral issues. Grant spent time and energy building a relationship with him and was proud when at the end of the semester, Isaiah had become one of his top five students. "Teachers uniformly value the small victories and triumphs that occur within the classroom. The greatest reward of teaching arises in those metaphorical 'light bulb' moments." Grant was also named High School Teacher of the Year.

Principal of the Year, is Ged O'Donnell who works at Montlieu Academy of Technology. Principal O'Donnell was recognized for his leadership at the technology prototype school, which has seen End-of-Grade composite test scores rise by 12.8 percentage points during his tenure as principal.

O'Donnell stresses the importance of having parents, staff and community groups invested in the school. He empowers those around him to achieve through high expectations, constant support for those expectations and a clear vision of success.
