CHARLOTTE, NC - Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say an unarmed man who may have been involved in a wreck was shot and killed by an officer as he ran toward him.

Police Chief Rodney Monroe says a police officer is in custody Saturday night, charged in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man in East Mecklenburg County.

A statement from police said officers responded to a breaking and entering call early Saturday, and found a man fitting a description matching one provided by a homeowner who called 911.

According to police, 24-year-old Jonathan A. Ferrell ran toward officers, one of whom used a Taser on him. Ferrell continued running toward one of the officers, who fired his weapon.

Ferrell died at the scene. Investigators think Ferrell was driving a car that was found down an embankment in some nearby woods and they're trying to determine if Ferrell was trying to get help from the homeowner who called police.

Ferrell was a former Florida A&M football player, police confirmed.
