Charlotte, N.C. -- One of Guatemala's most wanted fugitives has been deported back to his home country after living in North Carolina under an alias for the last seven years.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Thursday that Walter Barahona-Castillo was arrested in Charlotte by federal agents in July. The agency said the 34-year-old fugitive had been using the name Edgar Pernillo.
Barahona-Castillo was serving a 50-year prison sentence for kidnapping and extortion in October 2005 when he escaped from a high-security Guatemalan prison. Authorities say he was a member of Los Pasacos, a violent kidnapping gang infamous for disfiguring and sometimes killing its victims.
Barahona-Castillo was deported by U.S. immigration officials and flown Wednesday to Guatemala City, where he was handed over to authorities in the Central American country.
