GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Steven Tanger will donate up to $7.5 million in a "challenge" grant to the Greensboro Performing Arts Center (GPAC) if fundraising hits the $35-million goal by the end of the year.

If the goal is reached, GPAC will be known as the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts.

Tanger is the president and CEO of Greensboro-based Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, Inc. Tanger operates in 26 states and Canada. He grew up in Greensboro and attended Grimsley High School.

At a news conference at the Empire Room on Monday, Tanger said 80 percent - $28.3 million in private donations - of the GPAC fundraising target has been met.

Mayor Perkins was at the event and said the investment will change the city over the next 100 years.

The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro said this is the largest donation for GPAC. The foundation's initial goal for the effort was $20 million, but is now at $35 million.
