REIDSVILLE, N.C. -- Two men assaulted an 84-year-old man with a baseball bat during a home invasion, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office. It happened on the 2700 block of Lick Fork Creek Road around 6:30 a.m. Monday.
The man told investigators the intruders caught him by surprise. He told deputies the men attacked him in the hallway of his home and knocked him unconscious. He regained consciousness, dragged himself to a phone and called a neighbor for help. He had numerous injuries and was taken to Annie Penn Hospital for treatment.
WFMY News 2's Liz Crawford went to Reidsville on Monday to talk to neighbors about the incident.
Judy Evans has lived in the area her entire life. She was shocked by the violence.
"When you mess with children and old people, it's not good," said Evans.
Jim Worsham lives two doors down from where it happened. He said, " It's just one of those things you read about happening somewhere else. It's an unbelievable tight-knit community and it's just hard to believe something like that happened."
Neighbors said the victim lived alone and sometimes used an oxygen tank. Now, they want their friend to get healthy and whoever did this off the streets.
The sheriff's office said the suspects wore black masks that covered their faces and dark clothing.
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (336) 349-9683.
