NEW BERN, N.C. -- The mayor of New Bern is now facing child abuse charges in connection with his DWI arrest in May.
A report from WNCT says Mayor Lee Bettis is charged with two counts of Misdemeanor Child Abuse.
Bettis was indicted by a grand jury last week for the DWI charges.
His two step-children, 9 and 13 years old, were in the car with him during his arrest, according to the report. A test revealed Bettis had Xanax in his system at the time.
Bettis' former lawyer told WNCT the case will go straight to a superior court, which he said is unusual in a misdemeanor case because superior court is usually for felonies.
Bettis is scheduled to appear in court September 17 for the child abuse charges and October 3 for the DWI arrest.
