Greensboro, NC-- Rain might have put a damper on a Saturday dental clinic in Greensboro.

The DaySpring Church offered the free dental clinic to elementary school age children.

All the kids had to do to be seen, was show up with a parent or guardian. But only 20 kids came, which has the church's pastor trying to figure out why.

"That is what is so challenging to me is that we didn't have the turnout that we planed," explained Phil Collins, Pastor, DaySpring Church.

They planned for several hundred, but less than two-dozen kids showed up.

Pastor Phil Collins and his fifty-member congregation organized the event. It has been on the calendar for six months. Collins says they passed out thousands of flyers, spoke to residents in their church's neighborhood, contacted local organizations, and did all they could to make the event a success.

"Wow, you have this opportunity to go and have your child's teeth examined for free and why wouldn't you want to do that if you couldn't afford dental care?" asked Collins.

Although disappointed with the turnout, Collins says one of the children seen proved how necessary this clinic was.

A child was diagnosed with gingivitis.

"The infection, the things going on within her mouth, the infection draining into her system, I mean could have caused serious problems," explained Collins.

He added, "That was worth it all. One child, one child benefited from this event."

Collins' church has helped thousands of other children. Collins and his congregation have served several thousand meals to kids in their neighborhood, and have helped them get ready for school by providing free supplies.

"We have to do what we can to reach out and help these kids because if we don't, who will?" asked Collins.

Collins grew up in the church, and came back to be the lead pastor five years ago.

He says his heart is in the community and his next project is gathering school supplies.
