MAYODAN, N.C. -- Sturm, Ruger and Company, one of the nation's leading firearm manufacturers, is officially coming to the Triad.

In an announcement Tuesday, Gov. McCrory confirmed Ruger chose Mayodan, in Rockingham County, for its new plant that is expected to employ 473 people in the next five years.

The average salary will be $45,000 plus benefits. Ruger plans to invest more than $26 million into the Mayodan location.

Governor Pat McCrory said attracting companies like this is critical to North Carolina's future. "I firmly believe that if we're going to continue to thrive as a state and get out of this recession, we're going to have be a state that makes things, that builds things, that innovates things, that produces things and that grows things," McCrory said.

Ruger President and CEO Mike Fifer said every product the company produces is Made in America. He said it's challenging to do that, but it's worth it. "Unfortunately, a lot of state and federal regulations work against you. There are unfair barriers to our product being exported to other countries, but no barriers preventing their competitive product from coming in. It's a very unfair, not level playing field. We don't care. We're going to do it anyway," Fifer said.

Mayodan resident Keith Joyce said he was excited about the company's expansion plans. "I am very thrilled to see a company coming in and taking a building that I used to work in and bring it back to life and bring the community back to life. We really do need the jobs," Joyce said.

Graham Pervier, president of the Rockingham County Partnership for Economic and Tourism Development, told WFMY News 2 in July that he anticipates a ripple effect for the local economy if the deal was approved. He said it could bring more people and businesses downtown.

Plans for Ruger to potentially expand to Rockingham County were announced in June. Mayodan was among several locations considered by Ruger. Other potential sites were in Texas, South Carolina and Florida.

Ruger currently employs more than 2,000 people in New Hampshire, Connecticut and Arizona.
