Scientists at Duke and UNC are working to find a more effective way to detect bombs in U.S. airports with X-ray technology, according to a report from the Triangle Business Journal.

The Journal says current scanners make images based on the density of materials moving through the machines. They say these scanners can detect guns and metal objects, but aren't as good at detecting bombs because they are not as dense.

Duke Professor David Brady told the Journal that the technology they are working on can identify compounds found in bombs.

Read more about the technology at the Triangle Business Journal's website.
