Greensboro, NC -- Lightning is blamed for the closure of a runway at Piedmont Triad Airport (PTI). Airport workers are making assessments and repairing any damaged underground circuits.
Stephanie Freeman with PTI said lightning hit the runway which caused damage to circuits that are actually located under the runway. Freeman said the 10,000 ft long runway is off West Market Street and is one of the oldest runways at PTI.
The circuits control the lights along and around the runway, she said. Any incoming flights were able to use the other runway. The runway is scheduled to open at 2 p.m.
However, Freeman said they will close the runway again on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. for further repairs.
Freeman said it is not unusual for the runway or parking lot areas to get hit by lightning.
