Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem Police Chief Barry Rountree became Winston-Salem's 14th Chief of Police after taking his oath of office Sunday during a ceremony at City Hall.

Rountree is a 25-year veteran of the Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD), starting as a police officer in 1988 and then working up through the ranks serving as a Senior Police Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain.

Rountree was one of three finalists for the position that included Deputy Chief Wayne Scott of the Greensboro Police Department and Deputy Chief Kerry Putney of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

He says to not expect big changes, as he said during the announcement of his appointment to Chief, "We have a very good police department. I don't foresee sweeping changes starting off."

Rountree has been on administrative duty after he was involved in a shooting on Wednesday.

Rountree was responding to a call about a man with a gun in a Winston-Salem neighborhood. During the call, Rountree shot a dog that came running from a nearby house.

The Forsyth County District Attorney announced on Friday that Rountree was cleared in an investigation.
