Winston-Salem, N.C. -- The Winston-Salem Fire Department in Winston-Salem is changing how it responds to emergency calls.

Beginning on July 1, firefighters will only respond to 911 calls that are life-threatening. That means they'll respond to calls including, cardiac arrest, electrocution, stroke, gunshots or any situation where someone needs a speedy response.

City leaders said it will allow responders to get medical help when necessary and increase the availability of fire personnel. But the Winston-Salem Fire Department will also keep track of who abuses 911 calls. They will not respond to people who make three false calls in a year. But it will begin responding to calls after that year period is up. There will be some exceptions to the policy including if someone moves into a property where a previous person violated the policy.
