Lightning Strikes Home; FD Estimates $80,000 Of Damage

Winston-Salem, NC -- The fire department in Winston-Salem says a house caught fire after lightning struck the roof.

A spokesperson with the fire department said they were called to the home in the 1400 block of East Sedgefield Drive shortly after 9:50 pm. The lightning strike created a fire in the attic, which spread quickly; firefighters had the blaze under control by 10:57 pm.

One person was in the home at the time of the fire. The fire department said that person was alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and was able to make a safe exit. The Red Cross is assisting with temporary housing.

The fire department estimates the house has $80,000 worth of damage.
