Raleigh, NC --  The North Carolina government budget written by Senate Republicans has passed following a fiercely partisan debate that mostly focused upon a yet-to-be-detailed tax overhaul plan and on Medicaid.

The Senate tentatively approved Wednesday a two-year proposal that spends $20.6 billion for the year starting July 1 in a party-line 33-17 vote following more than three hours of debate.

Republicans defeated or avoided several Democratic amendments, including those that sought to take $770 million earmarked for tax reductions over the next two years to restore spending for education and rural economic development.

Democratic Sen. Josh Stein of Raleigh says the budget reveals misguided Republican priorities. Republican senators dismissed allegations that their tax proposal would help the rich at the expense of low- and middle-income families.
