Greensboro, NC -- Wearing a police badge comes with daily risks and sacrifices all in an effort to keep our communities safe. The men and women behind the badge say it's the sacrifice they make to protect and serve their community.

Sometimes that sacrifice is dying in the line of duty. At least 524, police officers have died in the line of duty in North Carolina according to the Officer Down Memorial.

On Tuesday, fellow police officers with various law enforcement agencies across the Triad remembered fallen police officers.
The Thomasville Police Department held a Peace Officers Memorial at the Thomasville Church of God on West Holly Road in Thomasville. In 2012, six North Carolina peace officers died in the line of duty. The ceremony is all part of National Peace Officers Week.

Law enforcement agencies serving in Guilford County held a memorial at the Governmental Plaza in Greensboro to remember fallen police officers. The ceremony featured a multi-agency honor guard, wreath-laying, and a 21-gun salute. The service honors 21 officers throughout the county who are memorialized on the monument at the Plaza.

The High Point Police Department held several activities as part of their Police Week. One event included a Fallen Officer Golf Tournament at Oak Hollow Golf Course. They also held a Memorial Run to Remember on Monday. Police officers also attended a Memorial and Candlelight Vigil at St. Stephen AME Zion Church on Leonard Avenue, Tuesday evening.
