High Point, NC-- Fire investigators in High Point are trying to determine what caused a fire Monday afternoon that destroyed a family's home.

Denita Lynch with the High Point Fire Department said they got the call around 1:18 p.m. to a house on Johnson St. When firefighters arrived, the house was already engulfed with smoke and flames.

Lynch said a man working on the house next door saw the fire and tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher but that wasn't enough.

Investigators believe the fire started outside the house in the rear portion. The people who lived in the house were not home when the fire started. The house had significant damage to the inside and outside, Lynch said.
